REGION X FEMICIDE IS CHILE’S 24th THIS YEAR PDF Print E-mail

A woman in Futaleufú, Region X, died at the hands of her husband Sunday. Sixty-year-old Mateo Toro Vallejos, who shot Juana Seguel Troncoso twice, later killed himself.

The killing marked Chile’s 24th femicide so far this year and came just four days after the Chamber of Deputies voted down a proposal to stiffen penalties against men found guilty of killing their female partners.

Last year police recorded 63 such cases in Chile. If the killings keep up at the current rate, this year’s femicide statistics will be higher still.

Another presumed femicide case took place in downtown Santiago this past weekend. On Saturday, 26-year-old Carolina Gutiérrez Andrade was shot on the street after leaving the restaurant “Vacas Gordas,” where she worked as a cashier. Gutiérrez later died in hospital. Police suspect the killer was a former partner.
